We finished our three year assessment at Children's Hospital the other day, and I must say, it went smashingly. The team that has followed Big-A since birth dispelled any concerns my community pediatric physio had about Big-A, and pronounced him absolutely at level for his age.
It was a big room: a pediatric neurologist, a pediatric physiotherapist, a pediatric psychologist, a speech/language pathologist, a nurse pediatrician, and me. Little-A was on a mat on the floor, kicking his legs and squealing in typical six-month-old fashion, as he had been in my arms or the stroller for most of the morning's appointments. He was waving his legs, sucking his toes and generally being six months old. And you should have seen this room melt. I mean really melt. They each started reaching out to give him a little squeeze (all women, by the way) and when I had given the nod to reach out and pick him up or touch him, it was Game On. Little-A was passed from lap to lap, cradled from arm to arm, tickled, squeezed and generally made ga-ga over through the entire course of our debrief.
And then he pooed.
I went to change his diaper and discovered how many opinions were suddenly in the room as to how best accomplish the change, and "oops, you missed a spot", and "here, let me help you with that diaper, it's crooked".
I thought to myself, "there's a little too much brain power in this room to be fussing this much over a diaper!" But I understand, and I think the physio explained it the best when she said "you don't know how wonderful it is to see a regularly-developed, at-level six month old baby being, well, just a baby!"
It must get awfully heavy for them sometimes, so I am glad Little-A and I were able to provide some levity.
Thanks, ladies!
